How I Cleared Up My Skin Because Of These 6 Simple Healthy Habits!

I can’t remember the exact date but I think it was about 8 months ago.

I remember it so vividly because there I was, sitting in front of my mirror at 8 PM on a Friday evening, after a very long day at work, when I suddenly broke into tears.

It was an overwhelming feeling brought on by a sudden realization that I looked almost like a 40 year old woman, when I was barely 3 months past my 25th birthday.

My face looked tired and well beyond its years. I was ridden with acne on my cheeks.

My pores were uneven and there was just this general lack of luster.

It wasn’t a year before this moment that I had taken up a job as a manager of a creative unit at a prestigious advertising firm. The money was good but the hours were long, and the deadlines very demanding.

My work had clearly taken a serious toll on my skin.

I would wake up at 6 AM, go for a jog on the treadmill, hop in the shower at 6.40 AM, get out of the shower, quickly dry myself, apply some foundation and eye-liner, quickly down a breakfast and head out of the door at 7.30 AM.

The next 11 hours were just work, and nothing but work. By the time I got back at 8 PM, I was terribly exhausted, hungry and just wanting to call it a day, as soon as I had dinner. I usually had a TV dinner, had a quick shower, caught some TV time before drifting away to sleep. This was my routine.

The day I realized that I looked so much older than I was especially harrowing because I was always complimented for my looks before I took this job. I ate well, exercised a lot and had a good skin care regimen that allowed me to have naturally glowing skin, all the time.

I was known for my beaming face!

Almost every woman I met would invariably ask how I always managed to look so fresh. But, after taking up the job as an ad executive, all people asked me after a few months were why I looked so stressed out, that I should “sleep more”, not “work so hard” or “take a vacation”.

I didn’t like how my skin was giving off the impression that I had no life!

I still had quite fun weekends, hanging out with friends. I was progressing well at my career. But I just couldn’t stand it when friends and family kept asking me about my skin and how tired I looked, because my face always looked exhausted, with no life.

I would be lying if I said the way my face looked didn’t affect my confidence.

That day when I broke down in front of the mirror was an awakening moment.

I thought to myself, “I have to do something here. I had great skin just a year ago. I should be able to get it back”.

That’s when I came up with a plan.

I didn’t have the time to exercise as much as I wanted to and I definitely didn’t have the time to prepare very healthy meals like I used to before.

But, I decided that I could make some time to put a skin care regiment back in place. So I got myself an eBook called AcneNoMore to learn more about my skin and acne and it was totally worth it, I learned so much more about my skin and how to keep it healthy!

I thought about all the good skin care habits I had before and decided to reinforce them.

Now, just 5 months after I made that commitment, I am very happy to say that I am back looking like my old self, with an exuberant face, with skin glowing and looking hearty, with people complimenting me everywhere I go, bringing back great memories! The confidence boost was just tremendous and I feel full of life again.

I want to share with you the 6 simple habits that I followed for just 5 months, to completely transform the quality of my skin.

I know there are a lot of women out there like me, who have lost interest in basic skincare simply because they don’t have time for it, because of their work or family commitments, or because they simply gave up, thinking that their youthful beauty was just gone!

I urge such women to invest a little time in yourself.

When you look good, you feel good. When you feel good, life is just so much more positive and rewarding!

I know you are waiting for me to get into the 6 habits that was my magical skin care routine. I won’t keep you waiting any longer. Here they are!

1. Spend 3 minutes on your morning face wash

I realized I was washing my face like guys do. In fact, I think guys were spending more time washing their face than I did. It was time to change that! I chose a low PH cleanser specifically made for morning use. Since you would have washed your face before you slept (yes, that is obviously another tip later on!), there’s no need to be very intense with your AM face wash.

What you want is a gentle cleanser that you will slowly work on your face, in soft circular movements, going from bottom to up on your face, using warm water. The gel that I picked had a very mild exfoliating effect as well, so I could knock off dead cells or bacteria that might have piled up on my face skin, from pillows.

The reason I want to emphasize on the fact that you must take 3 minutes is because you will be surprised at how quickly you wash your face, not doing a thorough job. Taking 3 minutes will allow you to cover every square inch in a very gentle manner, without any vigorous scrubbing.

2. Moisturize within 10 seconds of washing your face, using a day-time moisturizer with sunscreen!

I can’t emphasize how important it is for you to moisturize your face within 10 seconds of washing it.

Scientific research has clearly shown that pores are most open just after you wash your face, especially if you use an exfoliating wash.

Dab your face dry with a soft cotton towel and immediately apply a daytime moisturizer, with sunscreen. Apply small dabs in spots throughout your face and then gently massage in the moisturizer, until it is completely absorbed into your skin.

The massaging has to be very gentle as you don’t want to smear the moisturizer to make it a thin film like coat as opposed to letting it be absorbed into the skin.

I personally used this moisturizer that had a SPF 30 protection, since I went out for a good walk in the sun, around lunch time. You can choose this or an Olay moisturizer or anything of your choice, but with at least SPF 15 protection. SPF will give you anti-aging protection that is very important, especially if you spend a lot of time out in the sun.

3. Apply a face scrub, but only once a week

I highly recommend using a face scrub, but only once a week. There’s just too many women out there who use face scrubs every other day or even worse, on a daily basis!

Scrubs are abrasive and are meant to be used only after a considerable amount of dead skin cells, dirt and oils are accumulated onto your skin.

Using them too often will damage your pores, leading to other skin problems!

Since I use scrubs only once a week, I indulge and only buy the best out there, even if it means that I have to shell out some extra money for it. My personal favorite is the M3 Naturals Charcoal Scrub, with active charcoal!

I would recommend that you schedule your face scrub before a very good night of sleep. As soon as you scrub, be sure to apply a night cream to maximize the use of the scrub. Your pores are going to be super clean after your scrub and a nourishing night cream will do wonders overnight, restoring vitality in your skin at a very accelerated pace.

4. Never skip the night time cleanse routine

This is a very crucial tip if you wear makeup and especially if you wear a lot of it! I only used to wear foundation but even that clogged up my pores the whole day. While it is all right to wear it for a few hours, to smooth over skin imperfections, it has to come off at night.

There were many nights when I didn’t do a thorough cleanse and only did a face wash, sometimes not even that, before going to bed.

I now know that it was a perilous mistake.

Even if I don’t have time for the other skin care regiments, I always make time for my night time cleanse as it is extremely vital that you open up your pores and let them breathe at night, if you want your skin to rejuvenate.

So, please, please use a cleanser at night and gently cleanse your face. I use a cleanser with Ceramides that not just cleansed but also aided repair of my skin barrier.

5. Night cream intensifies your beauty sleep. Use it religiously!

They call it beauty sleep for a reason. While good sound sleep will do wonders to your skin, allowing it to heal and repair itself from the inside out, the addition of a night cream can intensify that process.

I highly recommend that you choose a night cream that also provides anti-aging benefits.

A good night cream like Olay Regenerist will add so much moisture to your skin that they will continually plump the surface cells on your face’s skin, wiping out wrinkles almost overnight!

The deep moisturizing effects hydrate your skin cells, preparing it for exposure to the elements the next day.

6. My personal secret sauce skincare tip for your face. Steam your face, twice a week!

While the other tips I have brought to your notice here might be tips you have read about somewhere, the use of a face steamer is something you wouldn’t have come across very often. Facial steaming has tremendous advantages to offer, as pointed out in our detailed post that talks about the benefits of facial steaming.

You can now buy a high quality facial steamer for personal home use.

There’s no need to go to a salon and pay for an expensive facial anymore. High quality home steamers are now capable of generating Nano-sized steam particles that can very deeply penetrate your skin. The accompanying moisture in the steam hydrates your face simultaneously. The real benefits comes from the opening of pores that will release deeply dislodged dirt, impurities and accumulated makeup products.

A lot of women have the habit of adding essential oils to their facial steamers. While the oils are definitely a good idea, you have to understand that a facial steamer will not work as well as when you just use water as opposed to water mixed in with essential oils. I recommend that you use just water.

Follow up a face steaming session that should last about 3-5 minutes with a wisely selected face mask. I personally used a mud mask with mud from the Dead Sea but there are a ton of other masks that you can choose as well. A mask has the ability to complement what a steamer does, by acting as an agent that uses the opened pores to pull out impurities from deep within your skin, when you peel off the mask.

A facial steamer is particularly useful if you have an acne problem, like I did. However, be careful about how many times you use a steamer if you have acne. Some people find that once a week is plenty enough as using it a second time in the same week might actually lead to more breakouts. Two was however the magic number for me!

So, there you have it.

6 ridiculously simple tips that will allow you to find back your skin that you had even years ago, when age, stress and a hectic lifestyle couldn’t take a toll on your skin.

All of these regiments that I have talked about will take you no more than an hour a week, at the most!

Trust me when I say that it will be time and a little money very well spent, when you are able to look at yourself in the mirror to find your lost self. The confidence boost is just unmistakable and you will begin to notice a spring in your step in just a few weeks after beginning this regiment!
