Best Korean Skin Care Routine For Both Day & Night

Your skincare routine is something very personal to each individual and should be tailored to your specific skin type and its needs. Therefore when I talk about the best Korean skincare routine for both day and night - this is a general overview of the type of steps that should be incorporated into your routine; however the types of products and how many you choose to you is entirely flexible and dependent on what you feel is best for your skin (they do not even have to be Korean products). I would look at this as guidance only and not something that should be strictly followed.

DAYTIME KOREAN SKINCARE ROUTINE

Double cleansing: This is a very important step in a Korean skincare routine, but I would say this is more crucial for your night routine. At the very least, I recommend using a 2nd step cleanser (aka water-based cleanser such as a foam/gel type cleanser, which you lather and rinse off with water - ideally pH balanced). This will ensure you have a clean, fresh base to work with when you apply the rest of your skincare products and eliminate the build up of oils and dead skin cells accumulated overnight.

Toner/ First Treatment Essence: These are both interchangeable as the 2nd or 3rd step - if in doubt, apply the one with the thinner consistency first. A toner is ideal to balance your skin’s pH level, especially if your cleanser has a high pH. It will also aim to soothe, hydrate and bring back the moisture that is lost through cleansing. An FTE is one of the most important Korean skincare steps - similar to toners in consistency, and very lightweight, this is usually more concentrated with beneficial ingredients to supply your skin with antioxidants, nutrition and hydration. It can promote cell turnover, for brighter, smoother, clearer and radiant skin. It also enhances absorption of subsequent skincare products that you apply after.

Essences/Serums: The heart of the Korean skincare routine. These are the crucial products that are more concentrated than your toners and moisturizers and pack the most punch in dealing with any skin concerns you may have. This is why it is the most important step to tailor to your own skin needs. My main concerns are usually brightening and anti-ageing - therefore I typically use 2 products in this category for my morning routine - one to help reduce dark spots and pigmentation and another that adds hydration/moisture to reduce and keep fine lines at bay. You can layer as many products as you want in this category, but as its my morning routine and I apply makeup on top, I like to keep it fairly minimal and focus on lightly hydrating steps.

Essences are typically a lighter consistency and deemed less potent than a serum. But with skincare marketing and labeling, these lines are being increasingly blurred so I would pay more attention to the ingredients list than the name of the product.

Moisturizer: This is a must-do step no matter what your skin type. If you have oily skin opt for a light gel-type moisturizer that is oil-free and look into emulsions or lotions which are much more lightweight than a normal moisturizer. Not using a moisturizer can actually make

Oily skin worse - your skin tends to overcompensate by producing even more oil and can easily lead to dehydrated skin, which in turns causes premature ageing due to lack of sufficient moisture.

Sunscreen: Wearing sunscreen everyday, all year round is really a necessity to complete your morning skincare routine. Its prevents a whole heap of skin issues and damage caused by UV rays including premature ageing, burning, sun spots, skin cancer etc. Even if you don’t think it’s a sunny day, UV rays are ever present, causing slow steady skin cell damage that isn’t as immediate and visible like getting a sunburn.

NIGHTTIME KOREAN SKINCARE ROUTINE

Double cleansing - you should always ensure not to skip the double cleanse in the evening. Going to sleep without removing makeup or washing your face can cause a lot of skin issues such as breakouts. Make sure you use an oil based cleanser for your first step which is able to break down the sebum and oil-based makeup and sunscreen. Then follow up with a water based cleanser which is able to further eliminate dirt, pollution and remaining residue that has built up during the day.

Exfoliating - this only needs to be done 1-2x a week as over-exfoliating can cause skin to become more sensitive and damage your skin barrier. This step is great to remove the build-up of dead skin leaving it looking smoother, brighter, softer and more radiant. It can also help reduce the appearance of pores and blackheads depending on the type of exfoliator you use. This step can include, wash-off masks, clay masks, physical scrubs or chemical exfoliants.

Toner/First Treatment Essence: This is the same as your morning routine, but the toner has the added benefit of helping remove any leftover residue that your double cleansing may have missed.

Essences/Serums: this step slightly differs from the morning routine, because unlike the morning when you’re in a rush to get ready and you want light hydrating products, in the evening you are able to take your time, apply more layers and thicker consistency products. This is when I can add up to 2-4 essences or serums and make sure to pat it in and wait for full absorption before adding another layer on top. Make sure you are going from thinnest to thickest consistency to maximize ingredient penetration.

Sheet mask: this is the fun step and can be done as frequently as everyday or as little as 1x a week. Sheet masks can be used before or after essences/serums or can be used in place of them since they can also provide the same beneficial ingredients to your skin. Sheet masks are great to cool you down when used in the summer and in the winter are a great way to add a high dose of moisture to parched, dry skin.

Eye cream: this step can be done morning and night but I think its especially good to apply at night because its when your skin can best recharge while you sleep. A good eye cream can reduce puffiness, dark circles and fine lines so when you wake you will look and feel more refreshed and rejuvenated.

Moisturizer/sleeping mask: for the evening, I will typically apply a more heavy duty moisturizer than in the morning as I don’t have to worry about how it sits under makeup. I also prefer a thicker moisturizer as your skin can lose a lot of moisture while you sleep and you want to wake with moisturized, plump skin as opposed to dry and tight. This is where a sleeping mask comes in handy as they are like moisturizers but with more potent beneficial ingredients. They help to lock in moisture while helping to repair and promote healthy skin overnight.

So there you have the ideal Korean skincare routine for both day and night. This is a short summary of each step, but if you would like more in-depth information please head over to wantasticbeauty.com where you can get a detailed breakdown in my guide to a Korean skincare routine.

Bambi

BIO: I'm Bambi, I'm a dietitian and herbalist obsessed with skincare. I started my skin journey over 2 years ago after a 10 years fight with acne I've decided to take care of my own. I've created Kherblog because I wanted to focus on something different than work and fill the empty space in my life but I've ended focusing on my skincare journey and sharing review as well as photography tips

There's no one Korean skincare routine that we all can follow. It's all about your skin and understanding. I believe that marketing did a lot of work in making 10-step skincare routine popular but in fact, it's not like every person needs 10-steps and we use these 10 steps twice a day. There are some basic elements which we can only expand according to the skin needs. It's important to make your skincare as more personalized as it only can be.

Before we start, we should remember that K-beauty is about layering and making skin clean and pure. We usually start with light formulas and next layers should be thicker and thicker.

The main base of Korean skincare is cleansing - to make your skincare work we need a clean "canvas" - you won't paint on a dirty canvas just like you won't put a serum on a dirty skin. There are different techniques of cleansing according to your skin type and routine. During the morning we usually need only one product to clean the skin - if your skin is dry or your skin barrier is damaged then cleaning your skin with a pure water might be enough but for oily skin cleansing foam or micellar water might be necessary. There are also two different schools of using micellar water - if the micellar water has very delicate ingredients then you can go straight to the toner, but if the water you use is full of harsh surfactants like SLS then it's good to clean your face with pure water after the micellar water.

During the evening, we need to remove the makeup from our face first. To do it properly you can use makeup remover and then a cleansing oil and balm. While removing the rest of the makeup with cleansing oil try to massage your face, it will improve the blood circulation. Then we can use a water-based cleanser like cleansing gel or foam and go to another step. There's a small tip for acne-prone skin - try to use water-based cleansers with pH around 5,5. Not many brands are informing the consumers about product pH but La Roche Posay, COSRX and Heimish are one of the brands that focus on cleanser pH since a good pH is a key to a fight with acne.

Korean skincare is all about moisture and glowy skin that's why hydrating toner is a must. Korean toners can be called skin - usually, Korean toners are thicker than Western toners. There are some trends like a 7-skin method or toner mask which can be useful on the dehydrated skin but they shouldn't be performed every day since it's more like a special treatment. As long as splashing your face with toner for 7 times during one routine might sounds like a waste, soaking thin cleansing pads in a toner and using them as a mask is a solution I like to perform on my skin from time to time.

Next basic step is an essence - a product type for the Korean market. Essence is a concentrated treatment which helps us to adjust the hydration of the skin. I feel like the most wanted and most popular essence is SK-II Pitera Essence which became a product that lots of brands are trying to create a similar product that can be used like dupes. These brands are Missha and COSRX - both brands have their own essences which are based on fermented ingredients but they are more affordable.

Eye Cream is a must! Since the skin around the eyes is thinner it needs a special care. Just think about eye area like about a paper, it's better to protect it from the beginning that try to fix it later. Two of the most popular products are A.H.C. Eye Cream For Face and Innisfree Orchid Eye Cream, they are well concentrated. I also use eye creams on fine lines and all the areas that I see some changes like near lips or on my forehead to slow down the ageing process and nourish the skin.

If it's an evening then the last basic step is a moisturizer - it can be a gel, emulsion or a cream. Whatever works for you, just focus on ingredients and your skin. I wouldn't recommend alcohol for any skin unless it's really low in the formulation, we don't want scent ingredients and harsh chemicals too. Let's focus on ingredients like Allantoin, Panthenol, Centella Asiatica, Licorice Root Extract, Calendula, Adenosine, Arbutin, Aloe, Green Tea, Madecassoside, Tea Tree, Witch Hazel, Squalane, Shea Butter or Glycerine.

Sunscreen should be the last step after moisturizer during the morning routine - it's all about slowing down the ageing processes and protect the skin from pigmentation as well as protect the skin from skin cancer. Just remember that the sunscreen in the foundation or bb cream is not enough and that we have to re-apply the sunscreen every 2-3 hours.

This basic skin care can be expanded depending on our skin types. You might be surprised where are the sheet masks? It's hard to use a sheet mask twice a day - that would cost a lot. Instead just use sheet mask twice a week after an essence. The sheet mask is usually a cellulose mask soaked in a special essence. The essence that's left in the packaging is good to use after the mask - just simply pat the rest of it onto your skin.

You can also use mechanical scrub or acid to remove the dead skin from the surface of your face. Mechanical scrubs can be harsh but some acids like Glycolic Acid or Lactic Acid can be helpful with pigmentation or ageing.

For me, a good serum or an ampoule can change your skin a lot. Ampoules are well-concentrated treatments which we can use for a month or for a longer amount of time. There are special ampoules with Centella or Propolis as well as Peptide ampoules - Centella or Propolis will be better for acne-prone skin while Peptides can make a difference for every skin type.

The sleeping mask is also a part of the routine which seems to be typical for k-beauty. It's a mask which we use 2-3 times per week before the sleep as the last part of the routine, this step should make the skin hydrated.

Before you change your skincare try to make a change with little steps, changing your routine at once might be bad for the skin, instead make small steps - a new product each month. Try to listen to your skin and don't forget that skincare is not only about products but also about your diet and lifestyle. Instead of quantity, go for quality and then your journey with Korean skincare might become the journey for the better skin.

Eros

BIO: I'm Eros! I’m a beauty boy blogger based in Malaysia with a sweet tooth who likes to take pictures, marinate in a million skincare products & bask in all things Korean.

The Korean 10-step skincare routine has dramatically transformed my acne skin, and I haven't looked back since. What I love about it is that it's totally customizable to fit your needs. You can skip or add some steps totally depending on what you feel your skin requires.

For the day, I usually don't have a lot of time to spend on my skincare so I keep it simple. The basic cleanse, tone & moisturize is my go-to morning routine, usually topped off with an SPF50 sunscreen. It’s good to go for products that leave your face feeling cool & fresh in the morning, so I suggest water-gel type moisturizers (especially if you have oily skin like me) that feel lightweight and do not get greasy throughout the day.

Night time is when I pamper my skin and layer on more products. After cleansing & toning, I layer on my essence, serum, masks, and moisturizers. Layering's rule of thumb is to apply products in order of thickness, meaning you should pat in thin products like essences before applying serums & creams. One of my secret weapons for healing and soothing acne is aloe vera gel! You can use it as a sleeping mask or a spot treatment and wake up to soothed, calm skin.

Who doesn't love K beauty?

Almost all young women today was aspiring to have that natural Korean look and glow, but how can you get it?

How will you achieve those porcelain white skin?

Here's the tip! With the right Skin care, you can keep pace or be on trend just like them. Just follow these easy and simple steps; it should start with a clean canvass, Yes! CLEAN! As in very clean. Use a gentle makeup remover and foaming cleanser to deeply cleanse the face! After that use a water-based toner just like my Favorite toner - Real Floral from the Brand Nacific.

The toner will remove the excess dirt and will also provide some toning and nourishing to the skin. Use a mild moisturizer in the morning to avoid greasing up the whole day, one of the best mild moisturizers is Klairs Rich Moist Soothing Cream and don't forget to put your favorite sunblock.

In the Evening you can use a very rich moisturizer, try using Nature's Republic Aloe Vera Gel it will help in minimizing the pores, lighten some acne scars and it deeply moisturizes the skin at the same time. Use also a Vitamin C dropper or serum, it will tighten and brighten the skin, two of the best I tried is from Klairs and Nacific.

And Voila.. you will have that Korean skin that you're aiming for.

BIO: Hey guys! I'm Euniunni, I'm a Beauty 7 Live Style Youtuber, Korean American living in Seoul sharing my passion & love for Korea! I mostly make contents about Korean Skincare, Korean Food, and the beautiful places I want everyone to be able to see in Korea<3 Come join the Eunicorn Fam~

First things first, after cleansing I use Klairs Supple Preparation Facial Toner as a my first step!

It's a mild yet hydrating toner that never lets me down, I love using this with a cotton pad which helps to remove all leftover impurities on skin & removes dead skin cells also for me.

Then I move on to my fave serum, I'm From Ginseng Serum. With anti-aging properties from Ginseng, this is a must-try to any of you from 15 and up if you are looking for a serum that will deeply hydrate skin and get it ready for the cream step! This serum also has helped so much with my wrinkles around my eyes and laugh lines too.

For cream step I love using OXYGENCEUTICALS Skin Barrier Ato Cream which something that you can reach for every day and night, no matter what kind of condition your skin is in. It is a cream to strengthen your weakened barrier and it helps to recover the condition of skin rapidly! I love using it under makeup or for night cream because both ways, it does its' job perfectly. Remember, you want to use a cream as a step to make a protective barrier for your skin so that it may be protected well throughout the whole day.

Then, I'm a huge fan of sheet masks! It's really important that you do use an extra SUM SUM to care for skin when skin is irritate or inflamed.

My current fave is Klairs Midnight Blue Calming Sheet Mask. Now, this is something that I want to use every single day! It's mild enough to be used daily. It contains Tea Tree Oil that helps to control my acne but it is soOoo mild that even though I use it daily it does not irritate skin.

One more thing I love about this sheet mask is that it contains cooling agents that makes my skin calm & soothed rapidly compare to so many other sheet masks out there!

You can use it for both day and night blue I do recommend using it for the night because it does contain natural BHA also:)

So this is my go-to korean skincare routine for both day and night!

I do love exploring and trying new products but these combo of products have never let me down for healthy and glowy skin so, I hope you guys get to try the products out and remember that great skin may not come over night but IT WILL COME someday if we keep trying, and it may seem like it doesn't make a big difference now, BUT TRUST ME, after 3,5,10years, your skin is going to look so much better compare to other friends your age, who did not take care of their skin so well! All the work is WORTH IT:)

My best tips for Korean skincare Routine are layering products and include SPF into your morning routine. Layering products is especially great for dry skin. It creates a barrier between the skin and the air so moisture stays within the skin cells. Layering products is better than applying a thick layer of product because it doesn’t overwhelm the skin. The skin can absorb all the products slowly, layer by layer. On the other hand, SPF helps to keep the skin looking young and healthy as it blocks UV, which harms our skin and contributes to aging issues

Her love for skincare and K-beauty started in 2013 after taking a Korean language course at Arizona State University and is what propelled her to start her Youtube channel in 2017.

K-beauty has introduced me to many, many skin changing tips. I have oily, acne-prone skin and my number one tip is to use an oil cleanser both day and night. Oil cleansers help to remove not only make-up but also sunscreen, sebum, sweat, and dirt from your pillow during the night.

My second tip would be to use a Vitamin C serum. I'm on my second bottle of the Klairs Freshly Juiced Vitamin Drop Serum (which now I use with the Klairs Freshly Juiced Vitamin E Mask for even better results!). It has changed my skin! Clears my acne, reduces hyper-pigmentation and appearance of scars, and is anti-aging. Lastly, the best advice any skincare guru can give you is to always use sunscreen!

Your skincare routine is virtually useless if you are not using a sunscreen everyday to protect your skin from UVA/UVB rays that can cause premature aging, skin cancer, etc.

I exfoliate daily around my nose because the sebaceous filaments can become clogged with oils and having this clear allows for a smoother makeup application. Sebaceous filaments are collections of dead skin cells that come back often enough to justify exfoliating every day.

Lisa Cobb

BIO: Lisa Cobb founder of premier Dallas med-spa Luxury on Lovers.  Although not Korean influenced, skincare expert Lisa Cobb knows what is right for women's skincare routine thanks to her many years of experience.

The ground rule of basic skincare is to exfoliate your skin. Your body sheds skin cells at an amazing rate every minute of every day. If you don't get rid of the dead skin cells, they'll just set in on your skin making your skin look dull and dry. No matter how much lotion you use, you're never going to have glowing skin if you don't exfoliate.

Grab a body scrub and hit the shower. You can make a great one with the ingredients in your kitchen sink. Use 1-part organic coconut oil to 1-part turbinado sugar or Himalayan salt. Gently rub your exfoliator in circular movements on your entire body from the shoulders down and rinse clean. Continue to do this 2-3 times a week for year-round beautiful skin. You'll want a gentler facial exfoliator for your face and neck and 1-2 times per week is sufficient. Many cleansers already have exfoliating ingredients such as glycolic, lactic, or salicylic acid. It's important not to exfoliate too much. You don't want to strip your skin of its natural oils and protective barrier.

To avoid wrinkles, use a light eye cream in the morning and a rich cream at night; tap the eye area lightly with your finger until the product is absorbed to stimulate circulation. Use a gentle, hydrating makeup remover or cleanser. Don't scrub harder to remove stubborn makeup; instead, gently wash the area again. Eliminate talc-based eye shadows, which sap moisture.

Under the intolerant sun, natural looks are best. If you intend to use foundation then also apply face powder with SPF to avoid patchy skin. Mineral make-up powders alone are not enough to protect your skin. If you must use a foundation, always use sunscreen underneath, or better yet, choose a tinted sunscreen with mineral powder to supplement. To protect your lips always use a gloss or a lip balm with an SPF of 15 to make your lips fresh.

Find a lotion that you won't forget to put on. You don't have time to wait for your lotion to sink in, so look for something light fast absorbing. Gels and purees are perfect fast absorbents. Make sure you apply right after you dry off from your shower. You need to seal in the moisture your body just soaked in.

Drink at least 8 glasses of water daily. If possible, carry a water bottle with you and remember to drink at least once every 30 minutes. Water not only helps you feel fresh, but it also prevents dehydration and will help wash out a lot of toxins.

The basic philosophy behind the routine (and the reason why there are so many steps) is to nourish and moisturize the skin. Rather than scrubbing the skin to reveal new skin, as is common in many western routines, Korean skincare focuses on putting hydration back into the skin and treating any skin issues by tailoring serums and products to your skin type.

A good night routine to follow includes:

Step 1 – Cleansing with an Oil-Based Cleanser

Oil cleansers are used first to remove sunscreen, makeup, and any build-up from the day.

Step 2 – Cleansing with a Foaming Cleanser

The typical Korean double cleansing method concludes with a second foam cleanser after your oil cleanses to get rid of any leftover product on your face.

Step 3 – Exfoliator

Exfoliators can be incorporated into your routine once to twice a week, to assist to clear out any dead skin and promote cell turnover.

Step 4 – Toner

Toners are then patted into the skin.

Unlike western toners, Korean toners don't function as another step in cleansing but are instead hydrating. They are intended to reset your skin to its optimal pH level and prepare it to absorb the next layers of skincare.

Step 5 – Face Mask

Koreans apply a sheet mask each night to improve hydration and suppleness while targeting specific skin concerns like wrinkles, uneven tone, acne, pigmentation, and fine lines.

Step 6 Essence

Essence is a quintessentially Korean step in skincare that treats the skin on a cellular level, promoting cell turnover.

Step 7-9 Facial Oil/Serum/Ampoule/ Emulsion

Oils, serums, and emulsions all provide extra hydration and are useful to include in a night routine because they contain high doses of antioxidants and active ingredients.

You can tailor them to treat any problem areas, like pigmentation, dryness, and wrinkles.

Step 10 – Eye cream

At night, Koreans apply an eye cream to prevent eye bags, dark circles, and puffiness.

Step 11 – Moisturiser

Koreans apply a heavier moisturizer at night than they do during the day, especially for drier skin types.

Step 12 – Sleeping Mask

Sleeping masks are applied last at night before bed. They are thicker versions of moisturizers that can be left on while you slept and washed off in the morning. Sleeping masks make the most of the skin's natural renewal cycle by working to repair the skin while you sleep.

A typical morning routine will usually involve Steps 2, 4, 6 and 11 of the above routine, followed by sunscreen. Koreans are religious with their sunscreen application, opting for SPF 50+ where possible.

David Pollock

BIO: He's an independent beauty chemist who has formulated some of the all-time best-selling beauty products for brands like Smashbox, Bliss, and SkinCeuticals. Today, he is an industry consultant and formulator for carcinogen-free beauty products.

A Korean skincare routine would include: the double cleanse: Remove makeup with an oil-based cleanser, then use a water-based cleanser to remove residue, dirt, and other impurities. It would then include an exfoliator, toner (to reset pH and remove any residue), essences (lightweight hydrators and specialty ingredients and/or lightweight serums), serums or targeted treatments (traditional serums, ampoules, etc.), masks (especially sheet masks); eye cream; moisturizer, and finally sunscreen.

Koreans are concerned about making an impression and want to look their best, but it goes beyond that. It's also about taking good care of yourself and being healthy. Skin care is taught at a young age. Some Koreans are more concerned about what's in their products and are looking for ingredients that are proven to deliver results. While the traditional skin-care regimen is quite involved, those who try it rave about the results.

The Korean beauty market combines tradition with advanced technologies. One example is the fermentation of ingredients. Many new breakthrough ingredients are the result of fermenting traditional skin care ingredients-such as squalene, olive oil, and sunflower oil-to create advanced anti-aging peptides.
