Tip #1: Drink Lots of Water

Even though you probably already know this rule, I simply cannot fail to mention it – water is crucial! Every cell in your body needs to be properly hydrated in order to function to its maximum, and so do the skin cells. When you’re even slightly dehydrated, your skin will start drying out and looking older and duller.

Being dehydrated doesn’t always mean that you’re thirsty. Sometimes, you’re dehydrated, but you don’t even know it because there are no obvious signs yet (dry lips, thirst, etc.)

However, your body can still be missing water. So, make sure that you drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. Doing this help your skin will look younger, fresher, and much healthier.

Tip #2: Always Use Sunscreen

31R2XuX8Y6L. SL500

Never leave the house without any sunscreen! This is a sentence that any dermatologist can confirm! One very important thing that many people tend to forget – sunscreen is not only for the summer. Even though on cloudy days you might not see the sun, its rays are always there, and they can cause skin damage any day of the year.

Not using sunscreen can greatly increase your risk of melanoma and can also cause other problems such as age spots, freckles, wrinkles, etc. No matter how good your tanned face might look, tanning without protection is extremely risky.

In the long run, it causes way more damage than good. So, protect your skin from the sun on a daily basis and don’t forget to apply sunscreen on exposed body part.

I personally use EltaMD UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46, works great and is recommended by many other dermatologist!

Tip #3: Eat Healthily

One of the main factors that can make or break our health is our diet. The food we eat is our body’s fuel and nourishment, so if the only thing you give your body is fast food, you cannot expect to look or feel good.

The skin reacts to the food we eat as much as any other part of our bodies would.

In order to have a healthy and clear skin, it’s best to stick to a clean diet consisting mainly of fruits, vegetables, complex carbs, good fats, and lean proteins. Make sure that you eat a lot of green leafy vegetables which can significantly improve your skin health and looks.

The food groups that you should try to avoid as much as possible are sugary foods, fast foods, simple carbs, processed foods, trans fats, and red meats. This is the best formula for preserving your youthful skin!

Tip #4: Don’t Skip Moisturizers

416SNPEp yL. SL500

You’re never too busy to moisturize your face! The moisturizer is one product that you cannot afford to skip, regardless of your beauty routine.

Carefully choose the type of moisturizer you use and make sure its compatible with your skin. There are special water-based and oil-free moisturizers for oily skin, as well as thicker and oily moisturizers if you have dry skin. And of course, there are moisturizers for normal skin as well.

The next thing you have to watch out for is your skin condition. For example, if you suffer from acne, choose a cream or lotion that can help you with that. Or, if you have sensitive skin, choose an all-natural and fragrance-free moisturizer.

If you don’t have one, I recommend you try Radha Beauty Retinol Moisturizer Cream, its all natural with no fillers, contains ingredients such as aloe vera, green tea, shea butter and more!

Tip #5: Clean Your Face Before Bedtime

During the day, we all have at least one or two products on our face, whether it’s a foundation, concealer or just a moisturizer. Even if you haven’t used any makeup during the day, moving around and sweating will still leave a layer of dirt and oil on your face. So, no matter how busy you are, never skip your bedtime face cleansing routine.

A trick I use on days when I’m super tired is that I always keep a pack of face cleansing wet wipes close to my bed so that instead of going through all the cleansing routine, I just grab my wet wipes and clean my face. Especially helpful on days when I stay out late at night.

Tip #6: Clean Your Face in the Mornings

This one’s a no-brainer. Always wash your face after you wake up, even when you have thoroughly washed your face the night before, sleeping can also cause oil to accumulate. So always try to start the day with a fresh face.

Your pillowcase contains oils from your hair and scalp as well as other impurities from sleeping on it the days before. This is why you have to wash and clean your face in the mornings.

Plus, you can’t really start your morning cleansing routine without washing your face, and the product that you are planning to apply afterward will stay better and longer on a freshly cleaned face.

Tip #7: Exfoliate, But Not Too Often

51AvrNWXLsL. SL500

When it comes to exfoliating, the trick is to find the golden middle. Not too seldom, not too often. Depending on the type of skin you have, once or twice a week is probably enough.

Exfoliating is a great way to get rid of the old and dead skin cells which helps you look much younger and healthier. Choose a product that contain lactic acid or alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) to achieve greater results. Or, stick to more natural and gentle scrubs.

No matter which product you use as your exfoliator, don’t be too harsh on your skin if you want to avoid irritation. This is especially true when it comes to the skin on your face since it’s much more sensitive than your body skin.

One of my friend has been using Skinfood Black Sugar Mask Wash Off Exfoliator and it seems to be working great for her blackheads

If you have some skin condition problem, consult a dermatologist before you start exfoliating since this can additionally worsen your condition.

Tip #7: Always Be Gentle With Your Skin

Your facial skin is extremely sensitive, so be careful how you treat it. Harsh chemical peels, rough exfoliators, and alcohol can cause more damage than good. Unless it’s been recommended to you by a dermatologist, avoid anything that can damage your skin or products you are skeptical of.

Another thing to be careful of is the way you dry your face after washing. Never rub, always pat dry! No matter how harmless washcloths and towels seem, roughly wiping your face can damage and visibly worsen an underlying existing condition.

Tip #8: Stop Smoking

I seriously urge you to give up this habit!

It’s already a well-established fact that smoking can cause several serious diseases. But, you should know that it also harms your skin.

Smokers usually have a gray skin tone and dull-looking skin. Plus, smoking causes premature aging and wrinkles on your skin. So, the best thing to do for your skin and your health, in general, is to give up smoking entirely!

I know it isn’t easy to quit, so here are some ways you can quit smoking. There is also a subreddit for a group of people who wants to start quitting smoking, why not join them and start!

Tip #9: Exercise

Doing regular exercise can improve not only your health and body, but also your skin. By exercising, you will sweat out the toxins from your body which will contribute to a healthier skin.

Exercising doesn’t have to be a torture. Depending on your activity, you can start with light to moderate exercises a couple of times per week.

For example, try jogging, bicycle, or fast walking. Alternatively, try doing some home exercises or go hiking with friends. Make exercising fun and you will never feel the need to skip it!

If you’re working out at home, try Darebee, they have a lot of programs and exercise routine from beginner to advance. The reason why I’m recommending this website is that you don’t need really any equipment to do their programs or exercises!

Tip #10: Avoid Touching Your Face

The oldest rule in the book – do not touch your face! Your hands are constantly touching things, so they’re definitely full of germs and bacteria, no matter how often you wash them. This is why experts recommend to avoid touching our face as much as we can.

Resting your face on your palms or drying your sweaty forehead with your hands can cause bacteria to enter your skin. This, in turn, can contribute to pimples, blemishes, and acne.

So, don’t scan your facial imperfections with your hands. Instead, wash your hands and face thoroughly and stand in front of a mirror to see if something needs fixing.

Tip #11: Never Pop Your Pimples

31c4g3r2KiL. SL500

Again, another well-known fact – never pop your pimples and zits! They have their own lifespan after which they will probably dry out and fall. So, avoid messing with them and creating a bigger problem. (Most pimple take 1 to 2 weeks to clear up)

I know how it feels popping away all those pesky pimples. Its one of our guilty pleasure, we know its wrong yet we still do it! But listen to me and just don’t! seriously don’t.

Popping a pimple can cause bacteria to penetrate the skin which will infect the pimple and escalate into a full-blown acne, especially if done in the wrong way or with dirty hands. There are many spot-treatment products available on the market today which can be used overnight to speed up the disappearance of the pimple.

One of my favorite is Acne Pimple Master Patch by COSRX, leave it on your pimple overnight and it will absorbs the pus and oil from the pimple.

Tip #12: Use Non-comedogenic Products

Non-comedogenic products (no matter if it’s moisturizers, foundations, etc.) are products which are specially designed not to clog and block your pores. These products are a great option for anyone who suffers from regular blackheads or acne.

As we already know, blackheads are basically sebum (oil that our bodies naturally produced), and dirt stuck in a pore or follicle.

What’s more, acne is only an irritated, infected, and inflamed blackhead. With this into consideration, it’s easy and logical to see how non-comedogenic products can help to reduce the appearance of these problems.

Tip #13: Avoid Hot Baths and Showers

Your skin produces its own oils that serve to naturally moisturize and protect your skin. When you shower or take a bath in hot water, you strip these natural oils off your skin. This is why, no matter how much you moisturize, your skin is again dry shortly after.

If you’re going to shower or bath in hot water, don’t stay in there for long time.

Tip #14: Clean Your Brushes and Sponges

This is one mistake that most of us are guilty of – forgetting to wash our sponges and brushes. No matter how expensive your products are, they will only harm your skin if you keep applying your makeup with brushes that are full of dirt and bacteria.

We already know that bacteria penetrating our skin can cause infection and inflammation.

Well, bad news – our makeup tools are the biggest doors to bacteria! To ensure that your skin is always clean, regularly wash your brushes or sponges with warm water and a special cleanser.

Tip #15: Avoid Dairy Products

Another helpful tip that might help you with hormonal skin acne is to avoid dairy products. Nowadays, many dairy products contain an overload of hormones that the animals are fed with and imagine the chaos that these hormones will cause in your body.

It’s not only the skin, but your whole body can suffer from this hormonal imbalance.

If you like dairy products, try switching up the regular milk with almond or rice milk, and cheese with tofu. If you aren’t willing to make this switch, then try to limit your intake of dairy and see if your skin problems have decreased but an ice-cream once in a while won’t hurt.

Tip #16: Check for Allergies

If you feel like you’re super healthy, you eat everything healthy and that you’re doing everything right, but you still suffer from any skin problem or condition, you might want to ask your doctor to test you for common allergens.

Some people are allergic to gluten or wheat products. These and similar allergens can cause many things in your body to go wrong, including your skin. So, if you cannot pinpoint an exact cause for your problems, always check if you’re allergic to something.

Tip #17: Avoid Stress

Stress is the main culprit for many diseases and conditions, including skin problems. We know that stress can be hard to avoid, but at least try to decrease your stress levels as much as possible.

Hormones get triggered when you’re stressed out, and it can damage your skin’s PH balance and cause an increase in sebum production, thus, causing more blackheads and blocked pores.

There are many ways to relax and de-stress your body, you just have to choose what works best for you. Some people enjoy a warm bath, while others use the gym as a way to get rid of their stress and negativity.

I personally don’t have any stress at all, believe it or not. I think its pointless to stress about something you can’t control, but if you have control over it, why stress over it?

So, just don’t stress it and enjoy 🙂

Tip #18: Don’t Use a Lot of Products

Products such as moisturizers, primers, foundations, spot-treatments, and cleansing gels are necessary and beneficial for your skin. However, excessive use of products might be contraindicative. For example, exfoliation and masks shouldn’t be used daily. Different oils, serums, and harsh products should also be used rarely.

In an attempt to achieve a better skin, many people end up irritating and damaging their skin even more. So, be careful of overusing some products and always stick to label instructions. If you feel that a product might be too harsh for your sensitive skin, switch it with a gentler substitute.

Tip #19: Consistent Care

No matter what routine follow for your skin care, be consistent and stick to it!

No product is magic, so expecting that one application will make all the difference is a common misconception. Taking care of your skin is a daily task, not a one-time fix. It’s the same routine as brushing your teeth.

If you go to bed with makeup and neglect your face the whole time, you cant expect that one expensive magical mask or serum will take care of everything.

Tip #20: Clean Your Cell Phone

Yep, your phone can also be one of the underlying cause for your face problems.

Cell phones and cases are full of bacteria from touching different surfaces throughout the day. We place them on the table, bed, pockets, in your purse, and we even bring them with us in the toilet.

Just imagine all these germs and bacteria touching your face several times throughout the day! Do you want it near your face?

In order to avoid skin irritation caused by your cell phone, regularly clean it with antibacterial sprays or wet wipes. Wipes will be a better option if your phone is not water resistant. Like this, you will ensure that the thing you touch the most is free of any impurities and preserve your healthy facial skin.

Tip #21: Use Anti-Age Creams and Moisturizers

Myth: You don’t need anti-age products until you get wrinkles.

Truth: Anti-age products should be used before you actually get wrinkles, as a prevention technique!

“Prevention is better than cure” – Desiderius Erasmus

Once you get visible lines and wrinkles, the damage is already done, so no anti-age product will diminish or eliminate those lines.

Anti-age creams should ideally be used after you turn 30, which is usually when your skin starts to lose its elasticity. Using anti-age products is a great way to prolong your skin’s youthful appearance. And no, they won’t do any damage if you start using them at a younger age!

Tip #22: Use Clay Masks

Clay is one of the best natural absorbent of oil and impurities! Clay masks will calm your skin, improve your complexion, suck out and absorb everything that’s stuck in your skin pores.

Usually, clay masks fit well on every skin type, and they rarely cause any reactions or irritations. So, regular use of these masks can greatly improve your skin condition and return that lost glow.

Clay masks are pretty straightforward to use. They will either come pre-mixed or in a powder form which is usually mixed with water to reach a mud-like consistency. Apply the mask on your face and wait for the instructed amount of time. After that, gently wash it with lukewarm water and pat dry your face.

One of the most popular clay mask you can buy is Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay Deep Pore Cleansing, it has over 10,000 reviews on Amazon!

Tip #23: Don’t be Afraid of Oils

Most people, especially ones with oily skin, are completely against using natural oils for skin. They have the misconception that these oils will make your skin even greasier.

Well, this is not true at all.

In fact oils can improve your greasy skin.

How?

By applying oils, you send signals to your body that it doesn’t need to produce extra sebum (body’s natural oil).

Some good oils that are safe for facial use are coconut oil, almond oil, tea tree oil for pimples and acne, and olive oil. Whether you use them on their own or as a base for masks or facial scrubs is up to you. Regardless, don’t be afraid of oils!

Tip #24: Facial Steaming

Facial steaming is like a sauna for your face! It’s an amazing way to open up your pores so that you’re able to extract all impurities, improve circulation, and bring back life to your skin.

When it comes to steaming, you can either choose to boil a pot of water and place your face on top of it for some minutes, or you can buy a facial steaming kit meant for home use. These are small and easy to use machines which bring tons of benefits for your skin.

You can read our review on the top 5 facial steamers here!

When you’re steaming your face, try adding a couple of drops of essential oils to maximize the steam benefits. For example, you can try using lavender, peppermint, or tea tree oil. All of these are amazing for the skin!

Tip #25: Avoid Sugars

Sugars and other high-glycemic foods have repeatedly been connected to increased acne development. Several studies confirm this theory. The best thing you can do if you suffer from occasional acne flares is to avoid or limit the consumption of sugary foods.

Simple sugars can be found in all snacks, pre-made meals, baked goods, sauces, etc. Anything that has a long list of ingredients will probably contain some variety of sugar.

Your best bet to avoid sugar is to stick to a clean diet. This means to eat as many healthy foods as possible such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, lean protein, fish, etc. Go fresh whenever you have the chance!

Tip #26: Don’t Wash Your Skin Too Often

Earlier, I said that washing your face before and after sleeping is crucial. However, avoid washing your face more than that, even if you have oily skin. Oily skin, in particular, shouldn’t be over-washed because, like that, you only stimulate the production of more oils.

Excessive skin washing can have two opposite effects, either make the oily skin oilier or make the normal and dry skin even drier.

Unfortunately, this is how it works. So, don’t strip your skin off all its natural oils. Washing your face when you wake up to prepare it for the day and in the evening before you go to bed to remove all that makeup is enough. More than that will cause an imbalance in your skin’s natural condition.

Tip #27: Pre-Exercise Cleansing

Before you hit the gym, make sure that you thoroughly remove all the makeup from your face. Never ever work out with makeup on! Can you imagine what will happen when your pores open up from sweating, and all your makeup and sweat get mixed together? The worst thing you can do to your face!

So, to avoid this horror, always make sure to clean all the makeup off your face before you start exercising.

Tip #28: Post-Exercise Cleansing

The same rule applies after you finish your gym session – always shower and clean your face!

Gyms are usually one of the worst places in terms of bacteria and hygiene. No matter how clean it seems to be, hundreds of people have been sweating and touching those machines throughout the day.

So, first of all, never touch your face with your hands, always with a towel. And second, jump into the shower and clean your face as soon as possible after your workout. By doing this, you will remove all the sweat and dirt from your face and body and also decrease the chances of any skin irritations.

Tip #29: Regularly Change Your Pillow Case

Although many of us don’t pay much attention to this, pillow cases and bed sheets can be the breeding ground for bacteria and germs. Aside from constantly shedding dead skin cells, when we sleep, we often sweat as well.

This creates a warm and moist environment where bacteria strives. Plus your hair and scalp impurities will stick on to your pillow. And although this might be better for your hair, it’s not so good for your face. All these bacteria will reflect on our face, in the form of blackheads, whiteheads, and acne!

To avoid this, make sure that you wash and change your pillow cases and bed sheets at least once a week.

Tip #30: Consume Enough Omega-3s

Omega-3 fatty acids are an extremely important part of a healthy diet. Aside from keeping your heart healthy, these incredible oils will also improve your skin’s health and appearance.

The best sources of Omega-3 comes from salmon, nuts, avocados, flaxseed, etc. Incorporating these foods into your daily diet plan will make your skin glow like never before!

Omega-3 reduces inflammation throughout your body, which is why it can be a great addition to the healthy skin. If, for some reason, you are not consuming enough Omega-3s through food, you can try some omega 3 supplements which you can take on a daily basis.

Tip #31: Skip Makeup as Much as Possible

Throughout our working weekdays, it’s practically impossible to leave the house without makeup on especially if the job requires it. However, during the weekend, try to avoid using makeup so that you give your skin some room to breathe.

If you constantly close your pores with foundation, your skin will start to feel dull.

So, if possible, try to have at least 2 days per week without any makeup products on. Trust me, your skin will thank you!

Tip #32: Don’t Forget Toners

After cleaning your face with your face cleanser and warm water, use a toner to further remove the leftover impurities.

We often make the mistake of thinking that our cleanser took care of everything, but this is not the case. Once you start using a toner, you’ll notice that it cleans out all the impurities, even when you think there are none.

Choosing a good toner that fits your skin type can be a bit tricky, so you will probably need to experiment at the beginning. Avoid using acid or alcohol-based toners and stick to gentler ones.

If you’re looking for a toner, try out Thayers Alcohol-free Rose Petal Witch Hazel, it’s has done wonders for many people.

Tip #33: Vitamin C

Aside from all the health benefits of Vitamin C, such as protection from colds, it also acts as a collagen booster. Collagen is the connective tissue of our skin, the one that decides whether our skin will be tight and youthful or old and saggy. So, enough Vitamin C intake is crucial for healthy skin.

When it comes to vitamins, it’s best to consume them from food rather than as supplements.

To satisfy your daily does of Vitamin C, eat a lot of citrus fruits, berries, and peppers. Incorporate these fruits and vegetables in your diet and make it a routine. After a while, your consistency will visibly pay off, and your skin will look much better.

An alternative way, you can use vitamin c serum and directly apply them to your face.

Tip #34: Rainbow in a Bowl

In tip #3, I mentioned that you need to eat a healthy diet consisting of fruits, vegetables, and lean protein. Now, I want to give you a tip that will help you remember what to eat.

Always have a rainbow of colors in your plate or bowl.

When making a salad, chop something red like a tomato, something green like arugula or broccoli, something yellow like bell peppers, and so on. The more colorful your plate is, the better for your skin.

Don’t be afraid to mix and match. If you get bored of one salad, try another or add some croutons or herbs to spice it up or maybe add some crunchiness.

Tip #35: Ensure That Your Hormones Are Balanced

Hormonal imbalance can occur for many different reasons. For example, in Tip #15 we mentioned that you need to avoid dairy products for exactly this reason. If you suffer from skin problems and you feel like nothing helps, it’s a good idea to check your hormones.

Men and women have the same body hormones but in different normal hormone ranges.

When some hormone increases or decreases from this normal range, the body can experience a chaos. This hormonal imbalance can cause mood swings, infertility, weight gain/loss, and skin problems such as acne.

A good example for this is PCOS – polycystic ovary syndrome – a condition in which women produce excess androgens (male hormones). This surplus of androgens such as testosterone can cause hormonal acne breakouts in women, as well as a bunch of other problems such as lack of ovulation and facial hairs.

So, if you suffer from acne without any underlying cause, always check if your hormones are under control. Once you know this, there are many different medical and natural treatment options.

Tip #36: Reduce Your Exposure to Toxins

In today’s modern day, toxins are all around us and almost impossible to avoid. But, we should all try our best to stay clear of them as much as possible. Toxins are closely related to your general health, as well as your skin health.

Toxin overload in your body can manifest with acne breakouts and other skin problems.

Getting rid of toxins is your liver’s job. But, the liver sometimes get overwhelmed by the amount of toxins it needs to clear out, so it’s a good idea to lend a helping hand to your good friend, liver.

Some things you can do to reduce your toxin exposure is to eat organic foods, to avoid using chemical products, avoid smoking and second-hand smoking, and so on. And finally, introduce some toxin-removing foods in your diets such as dandelion tea, artichokes, beets, liver, and green leafy vegetables.

Tip #37: Get Enough Sleep

Sleeping at least 8 hours per night is crucial for all your body functions to work at their maximum. Your body restores and repairs itself during sleep, so don’t be surprised that this is a huge factor for many problems.

Enough sleep will keep your hormones in check, reduce stress levels, and give your body enough time to regenerate.

No matter how busy or stressed you are, always make time for a good night’s sleep. Since your skin is your biggest organ, it will definitely be affected by lack of sleep. Give yourself a break and go to bed earlier tonight.

Tip #38: Consume Enough Antioxidants

Antioxidants play a great role in our bodies. They’re like our little soldiers who fight off free radicals and toxins.

These toxins and radicals have to be eliminated because they contribute to different diseases and conditions, including skin problems. To eliminate these radicals and prevent them from damaging your cells, you need to consume a lot of antioxidants.

The best way to consume antioxidants is through food.

You can choose from many foods rich in antioxidants such as berries (especially blueberries and goji berries), dark chocolate, nuts, grapes, green vegetables, green tea, fish, and beans. If you’re feeling like you’re not taking enough antioxidants through food, try taking them through supplements such as Selenium and Vitamin E.

Tip #39: Indulge With a Glass of Your Favorite Red Wine

Red wine contains a powerful antioxidant called Resveratrol which is known to help fight age lines and wrinkles. The ability of resveratrol keeps your skin firm and young-looking.

Even though the benefits of resveratrol are numerous, don’t go overboard since consuming a lot of alcohol is contraindicative for your skin problems.

Another option would be to purchase a topical serum or lotion containing resveratrol.

Next time someone bothers you and your red wine, tell them whats up 🙂

Tip #40: Put Your Hair Up

As you know, washing your hair every time removes the natural oils in your hair and isn’t really recommended. But, when you haven’t washed your hair for some days, it can become greasy and house to many bacteria. In these days, when you’re just too busy to shower, you should try to avoid your hair touching your face.

A good solution for this is to put your hair up or at the sides for guys with long hair.

For girls a ponytail will hide that your hair is greasy while at the same time keep your hair away from your face – double win! Also, make sure to collect your hair before you go to bed to avoid as much face contact as possible.

Tip #41: Adjust Your Skin Care Products to the Weather

The weather can greatly affect your skin. So, one type of product cannot fit for both cold and warm temperatures or dry and humid climate. This means that you will have to change and adjust your skin care products you use according to the weather and seasons changing.

In winter, the cold and dry weather can dry out your skin which means that you will need thicker and greasier products. On the contrary, during the summer when the weather is hot, we often sweat so we will need more light and water-based products.

Tip #42: Use Rosewater

Rosewater is one of those incredible products that works for every skin type! Its soothing and calming effects on your skin will positively surprise you.

If you have sensitive skin that’s easily irritated by harsh products and weather changes, rosewater is perfect for you. Or, if you suffer from any redness or dry patches, rosewater can help you calm and balance your facial skin.

Another great use of rosewater is that you can lightly spraying it on top of your makeup to achieve that natural and dewy look.

Tip #43: Read the Side Effects of Medications

Many people struggle with acne or other skin problems with no obvious underlying reason. In such cases, it’s smart to check the side effects of every single medication you’re taking to treat other conditions.

For example, some medications that contain cortisone, iodine or androgen hormones can cause acne as an unwanted side effect.

Tip #44: Moisturize Your Body

We’ve already established the importance of moisturizing your face, but don’t neglect your body as well. Depending on your skin type, you can choose either thicker and oilier lotions or lighter ones. The best time to moisturize is after your shower because then, your pores will be open and your skin will absorb much better.

Regular body moisturizing will prevent dry and flaky skin as well as minimize the appearance of stretch marks. Since stretch marks appear mostly on dry skin, when you lose or gain weight fast, it’s important to properly hydrate your skin.

Tip #45: Try Aspirin Exfoliators and Masks

The best thing for your skin isn’t always the most expensive one. On the contrary, homemade masks and exfoliators can sometimes work better than then ones you buy.

One great example for this is the pill we all have at our houses, aspirin. Aspirin contains an acid that many cosmetic brands use in their products. By crushing one or two aspirin pills and mixing them with water and honey, you’ll get an amazing exfoliator or face mask.

Here are 15 face mask you can DIY today for your acne problems.

Tip #46: Use Turmeric

Turmeric is the spice that gives your favorite curry dish its bright yellow color. But, this is more than just a cooking prompt. Turmeric is also a fantastic anti-inflammatory agent which is famous for its skin-lightening properties. Furthermore, turmeric can help you fight acne and acne scars, as well clear out your facial complexion in general.

The benefits of turmeric are numerous, but for skin use, it’s best to prepare it as a facial mask. And don’t be afraid of the yellow color when you apply it. All that is easily washed away. In the end, you’ll see visible improvements on your skin.

Tip #47: Toothpaste as a Spot Treatment?

You have seen many DIY cream toothpaste (not gel) being used as a spot treatment zits and acne. Toothpaste are meant for your teeth not face, other wise they would make one called facepaste.

Because most toothpaste contains a drying agent, it may have a drying effect on your pimple and may reduce the redness overnight but that doesn’t mean that its good for your skin.

Sure, you can as it once or twice when you’re in a pinch, but if possible I would advise you to leave the pimple as it is and let it pass or you can use COSRX Acne Pimple Master Patch instead.

Tip #48: Use Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera, one of my favorite plant because of the amount of benefits it provides to our body. Typically, aloe is used in after-sun products to calm the skin. It is also used to treat scars, burns, wounds, etc.

But, aloe vera can also help you get rid of acne and other skin problems. If you have an aloe vera plant, extract the gel from one leaf and apply it on the pimple or other problem areas. If not, buy a pure aloe vera gel and see if it works for you.

Tip #49: Prepare and Drink Detox Water

Detoxifying your body is a crucial step to achieving a clear and healthy skin. You can make this water yourself at home with simple and cheap ingredients.

One of the best ways to prepare water that will detoxify your body is to add lemon, cucumber, and mint leaves in a water bottle and leave it in the fridge for some hours. You can prepare it at night before you go to bed so that it’s ready in the morning. Drink this batch throughout the day and in the evening prepare a new one for the next day.

There are thousands of detox drink recipes online, just google them and you will surely find one you like!

Tip #50: Lemons

If you’re prone to blemishes and sunspots, lemon might be your answer. Simply cut a lemon in half and rub your face with one half of it. Lemons contain acids which gently exfoliate the skin as well as Vitamin C which is a well-known method of skin lightening.

The same procedure can be done if you want to get rid of your summer suntan. Rub the lemon on your face or desired body part and you will notice a huge difference after a couple of days.

Kris Rile did an experiment on this and the lemons has zapped away most of her zits! You can read the full article here.

Tip #51: Honey Mask

Honey, another of my favorite. Not only is it delicious, it also offers tons of beneficial properties for our skin. Its antibacterial features will keep your face clean, not only that, honey contains an abundance of vitamins, antioxidants, and minerals necessary for a healthy and clear skin.

Honey can be used as a mask on its own or mixed with milk, yogurt or lemon, depending on what you’re trying to achieve. Milk and yogurt are usually added to gentler masks for sensitive skin, while lemon can be used for its additional brightening effects.

Tip #52: Green Juice

Green juice and smoothies have attracted huge media coverage and attention in the last few years and there’s a good reason for it! We rarely eat all the veggies we’re supposed to eat in a day, so it’s much easier to blend them or juice them. This way, we still get the nutrients we need from them without having to consume them in such large quantities.

Green smoothies and juices have exceptional benefits for your whole body and skin in particular. It will help you get a healthy glow, detoxify your body, and a beautiful healthy skin.

You can make your own combinations of green juices and smoothies, but some great things to add are kale, lettuce, cucumber, green apples, celery, limes and lemons, kiwis, mint or cilantro, and so on.

Tip #53: Take Care of Your Neck and Chest

The age of your skin is not only shown on your face but on your neck and chest as well. Most people tend to forget these areas. As a result, when we get older we get that wrinkly and saggy skin there.

Every product that you use on your face, especially anti-age moisturizers, SPF creams, and serums, can also be used on your neck and chest. The skin covering these areas are also thin and sensitive, which means you should treat it the same way you would for your face.

Tip #54: Be Careful of Shaving and Waxing

Shaving, waxing, and other forms of hair removal can actually harm your skin. When shaving, make sure to use a shaving foam, gel or conditioner that will smooth out the area. Be especially careful of hot wax which can burn and leave permanent scars.

Always sanitize the area before and after waxing to avoid bacteria penetrating your skin. This will greatly reduce irritation and inflammation. After shaving or waxing, thoroughly clean the area and go over it with an ice cube to reduce redness and close the pores.

Or you can just go to a professional!

Tip #55: Increase Your Zinc Intake

Zinc has been known as a great helping hand with skin problems. This is due to its function to heal and regenerate damaged tissues. So, it can help you fight acne and other skin problems.

A simple way to increase zinc in your diet is to buy zinc-fortified cereals, seafood, beans, nuts, and poultry.

Tip #56: Check Your Thyroid Function

Your thyroid gland is an important organ that controls many different metabolic functions. And guess what – it can also affect your skin!

Thyroid under or overproduction of hormones can affect your skin in many different ways. You might experience acne breakouts, dryness, oily skin, and so on. One other symptom of abnormal thyroid function is sudden gaining or losing weight without any changes in diet or activity levels. So, make sure to check your thyroid to receive the proper treatment as soon as possible.

Tip #57: Shot of Cortisone for Emergencies

For a severe acne which cannot be treated at home, your best bet is to go to your dermatologist and ask for a shot of cortisone. Although this is not something that’s recommended for regular use, it can be your only choice on important days such as graduation, prom or weddings.

Tip #58: Salicylic Acid

Products using salicylic acid have been popular in the skin care industry for a long time. This acid acts as an exfoliator which removes the outer layer of dead skin and exposes a new, healthy, and fresh layer of skin underneath.

Depending on your skin sensitivity, make sure to choose the appropriate percentage of salicylic acid. Products that contain this ingredient are usually used for exfoliation, acne treatments, as well as removing different skin growths such as warts and calluses.

When used as an acne treatment, salicylic acid works by unclogging and opening the pores. However, you have to use it continuously for the best effects.

Tip #59: Benzoyl Peroxide

While the above-mentioned salicylic acid works only by unclogging the pores, benzoyl peroxide has an additional antibacterial function.

So, benzoyl peroxide will not only open your pores but also destroy bacteria. This double function of benzoyl makes it an excellent acne fighter.

Like most others, products containing benzoyl peroxide are not a quick fix. You will need to consistently use them for several weeks or months to see the best results.

Tip #60: Chemical Peels for Skin Discoloration

If you’ve suffered from acne in the past, you probably have a couple of acne scars and skin discoloration spots. Unfortunately, these need more patience until they’re resolved.

Your best bet for these problems are chemical peels. Chemical peels are usually done at professional salons, although there are options for home use. These peels are more abrasive and harsh, so they shouldn’t be practiced often.

In any case, they work by chemically exfoliating the upper skin layerwhich eventually peels off and exposes a new, better-looking layer of skin.

If you’re searching for one you can use at home, give Exuviance Performance Peel AP25 a shot.

Tip #61: Avoid Oily Food

Oily foods, especially fast foods such like Mcdonalds, are the absolute worst when it comes to skin health! Even though you might not feel the effects immediately after, the grease from these types of food can definitely cause extra sebum to build up in your skin pores.

Be especially careful and adhere to this rule if you have oily skin or suffer from the occasional acne breakout. Avoid oily food as much as possible!

Tip #62: Be Careful of Expiry Dates

Skin products, whether it’s makeup or beauty product, they all have an expiry date which should be respected.

You wouldn’t eat an expired food, would you?

No reason for you to use an expired product on your face. It will just harm your skin instead.

Tip #63: Learn Your Skin Type

You would be surprised how many of us are wrong about our skin type. Even though the classification of “dry/oily/combined” seems pretty straightforward, in reality, it’s more complicated than that.

Let’s say, I have dry skin but sometimes it’s unusually oily, so what should I use?

My skin can be sensitive, but not always, so do I have sensitive skin? My skin is dry, but my nose is always oily? These are only some of the many questions going through every woman’s mind.

If you’re unable to assess your skin type, ask a dermatologist. They should be able to help you so that you can make an informed decision when buying your skin products.

Tip #64: Lightweight Makeup for the Summer

The number one complaint us girls have during the summer period is about our makeup application.

Even though our bodies love the sunrays, our makeup-covered face, eh not so much. In order to avoid the sun and sweat to melt your face like an ice cream, use the lightest products possible. Plus, heavy products mixed with sweat will clog your pores immediately.

As an example, replace your foundation with a quality BB cream or a tinted moisturizer. The less product you have on your face during the summer season, the better! Like this, you will avoid acne breakouts which are extremely common in this period.

One more important note is, always to make sure that your product contains SPF of at least 30 throughout the summer months.

Tip #65: Goat’s Milk Products

Goat milk contains an optimal PH level for your skin! Products containing goat’s milk are incredible for those of you with irritable or sensitive skin. Goat’s milk is probably one of the least irritating ingredient ever! It has a calming and hydrating effect on your face, and it will balance your skin as well.

Many products contain goat’s milk on the market, such as soaps, cleansing milk, toners, moisturizers, and so on. If you’re striving towards more natural products and avoiding harsh ingredients, this is definitely what you need!

Tip #66: Avoid Fragrances

Many skin products contain fragrance, and this might not be a problem for some people, but a huge problem for others! To stay on the safe side, we recommend you to avoid artificial fragrances in all skin products, especially the ones used on your face.

Aside from the allergic reactions, strong fragrances can also irritate your skin and cause dryness and redness. So, better stick to natural-smelling products as much as possible.

Tip #67: Hot and Cold Water Misconception

So many people think that hot water open up your pores, myself included. But it’s a common misconception, the hot water makes our skin swell which we think it opened up the pores. Same for the cold water, it won’t close up your pores.

So hot or cold, it doesn’t matter.

Tip #68: A Separate Face Towel

A rule as old as time – never use your body or hand towel as your face towel! Always have a face towel that’s only yours, and use it only for your face. What’s more, replace it with a new one every couple of days.

Hand and body towels have a lot of bacteria which can inflame and irritate your face. Even though these bacteria are harmless for your body, they can really damage the sensitive skin on your face.

Tip #69: The Magic of Berries

Berries are some of the best fruits when it comes to having a clear and healthy skin. They are a great source of antioxidants and Vitamin C, two of the most important factors that contribute to skin health.

While some fruits are not recommended because of their high sugar content, berries have very little sugar, which makes them the best fruit option ever!

For an added benefit, you can use berries as a topical mask without any fear of side effects. Raspberries can be especially beneficial when applied as a face mask.

Tip #70: Vaseline for Dry Skin

Lots of people use Vaseline all the time to improve their dry skin.

I do too!

Vaseline is also non-comedogenic which means that it won’t clog your pores or irritate your skin!

Most people heels and feet are commonly dry, try applying Vaseline and transparent foil on your feet throughout the night. The next morning you will wake up with feet soft like a baby. Or, use Vaseline on your dry elbows or knees.

Tip #71: Microdermabrasion Treatments

Microdermabrasion treatments uses a small tool which sort of sands off a layer of your skin. This treatment is slightly more abrasive than exfoliation but can give you great results.

Microdermabrasion is done for several different reasons.

First, it helps to diminish or eliminate acne scars. Then, it can help with minimizing stretch marks on your body. Next, it helps with pigmentation issues and blemishes. And finally, it helps to clean out all the impurities from your skin and reduce the size of the pores on your face. So, once in a while, these treatments are definitely worth it!

Tip #72: Massage Your Face

Gentle facial massages can be done with different oils or lotions to improve circulation. With gentle massaging motions, you will stimulate the blood flow to your skin, which in turn brings more oxygen and nutrients to the skin. This will make you feel younger and refreshed.

Another plus is that massages promote collagen production and increase the elasticity of your skin. Combine this with your favorite product, and you have a total win!

Tip #73: Clean Your Eyeglasses and Sunglasses

Everything that touches your skin needs to be completely clean and free of bacteria. Before, we mentioned that you need to clean your cell phone regularly. Well now, we have another tip for you – make sure that you regularly clean your eyeglasses and sunglasses.

Normally, all of us leave sunglasses on the table when we go out for a coffee, and imagine that hundreds of people have touched that table. Or, we leave our eyeglasses lying around in the house, where they’re exposed to dust, germs, and so on. For this reason, each time you put your eyeglasses or sunglasses on, clean them thoroughly, not just the lens.

Tip #74: Regularly Snack on Nuts

Most nuts are rich in oils, essential vitamins and nutrients that can do wonders for your skin.

Some of the best choices for a healthy, clear, and glowing skin are walnuts and macadamia nuts which are full of Omega-3 fatty acids. Another awesome choice of snacks is Brazil nuts which contain selenium, a nutrient connected to skin health and elasticity.

Tip #75: Increase Your Fiber

One of the many reasons for the appearance of acne is improper digestion of food.

Your digestive system plays a role in your overall health, so it’s no wonder that it can also affect the appearance and quality of your skin. In order to improve digestion and have a healthy skin, increase your daily fiber intake.

Some foods that contain fiber include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, oats, and many others. However, increase your fiber gradually so that you avoid bloating and gases.

Tip #76: Skin Solutions are not “One-Size-Fits-All”

Every person has different skin types, skin sensitivity, and skin reaction to different products. Which means, not everything that worked for your friend will work for you.

The fact that you both have acne doesn’t mean that you both have the same cause of acne. So, don’t be surprised if your skin doesn’t react the same to a certain product.

You’re welcome to look for advice and consult people who can tell you their experience about a product. However, don’t use everything you hear just because it helped someone.

Do your research and consult a dermatologist before you decide that you cannot be helped! Many times, the solution might be simpler than you think.

Tip #77: Consider Using Retinoids

Retinoids are chemical compounds of Vitamin A, which aside from being used in skin cancer treatment, are also used to improve the appearance of your skin.

Many anti-age creams and moisturizers contain a form of retinoid. This compound is the number one recommendation of all dermatologists since it can help with several different skin problems: acne, acne scars, psoriasis, wrinkles and lines, age spots, and so on.

If you suffer from any of these conditions and need help, consult your dermatologist and get a prescription.

Tip #78: Use Products in the Correct Order

When it comes to your daily skin care regime, the correct order matters as much as the quality of the products.

What does this mean?

Typically, before you apply any other product, you clean your face with your cleanser. After that, we either apply a toner and a moisturizer or only a moisturizer.

But whats next?

In cases of multiple-step skin care routines, stick to the “thin first, thick later” rule. This means that thinner and more watery products go first, and thicker products go on top of them.

Tip #79: Use Products Correctly

Not just the order, but also timing matters when it comes to skin products. Especially for two things – foundation and moisturizer. When to apply moisturizer and when foundation?

The best timing for a moisturizer is right after the shower when your pores are open and ready to absorb it. On the contrary, the best time for a foundation is when your pores are closed! Never apply foundation right after your shower. You don’t want it to absorb and clog your pores!

Tip #80: Eliminate or Limit Alcoholic Beverages

Alcohol weakens your immune system and is bad for your health in general, but it can also negatively affect your skin health. There are many reasons for this.

First of all, alcohol causes dehydration which we’ve established is bad for your skin. Second, alcoholic beverages usually contain sugars (yes, especially your favorite cocktails) which also have a negative impact on your skin appearance. And finally, it disturbs other bodily functions which means that it indirectly damages your skin in more than one way.

Tip #81: Avoid Alcohol in Your Beauty Products As Well

Alcohol should be avoided not just as a drink, but also as an ingredient in your skin care products. People with oily skin might not find it so worrisome. But, people with normal and especially dry skin definitely have to avoid alcohol in their products.

It’s widely known that alcohol irritates and dries out your skin. So, avoid it at any cost, or you will end up with dry, flaky, and lifeless skin.

Tip #82: Get Rid of Puffy Eyes Naturally

When we sleep, our blood doesn’t circulate as much which is why we wake up with puffy eyes. This can be solved with a few simple and easy tricks.

The first thing you can try is to place a spoon in the freezer and then hold it pressed on your under eye for a while. Another option would be to place cold slices of cucumber on your eyes. And finally, chill a green tea teabag and place it on your eyes. All these things work because of the cold sensation which diminishes the puffiness and tightens the blood vessels under your eyes.

Tip #83: Try an Oatmeal Mask

Oatmeal, another of my favorite DIY!

Oatmeal is a great moisturizing skin agent which can also have a double function as a gentle exfoliator. My way of using the oatmeal mask is that I cook the oatmeal first and then cool it down.

Cooked oatmeal helps reduce inflammation while raw oatmeal is great for exfoliating.

For an added benefit, mix the oatmeal it with honey! As honey is a great antiseptic, this will greatly help your acne problems.

Tip #84: Overnight Masks

Masks meant for overnight use are an extremely powerful tool in your battle towards achieving a healthy and glowing skin. Basically, as the name suggest, these masks are applied on your face before going to bed and taken off in the morning when you wake up.

Depending on your skin’s condition, there are several to choose from, pick one that’s best for your skin. For example, if you have dry skin, get a deep moisturizing overnight mask.

Tip #85: Humidify Dry Air

This is a tip that’s incredibly helpful for keeping your skin fresh in the winter months.

During this cold period, central heating or other heating devices you have in your home can seriously dry out the air. This is bad, not only for your breathing but also for your skin which will become dry and flaky.

So, in order to solve this issue, buy a room humidifier. You can adjust the humidifier based on how dry or humid you need the air to be for optimal skin health.

Tip #86: Avoid Indoor Tanning

Indoor tanning beds and booths are something that you should definitely stay away from if you wish to preserve the health and beauty of your skin. UV rays are a high-risk carcinogen which can contribute to skin melanoma.

Plus, indoor tanning causes premature skin aging, wrinkles, skin dryness, eye damage, etc. Indoor UV lights are more dangerous than sun rays, especially since most people forget to use sun protection when tanning indoors.

But If you still wish to tan, I recommend you don’t do it very often and remember to put some tanning lotion.

Tip #87: Green Tea

Green tea contains many antioxidants such as EGCG which boost your metabolism, increase blood flow, and bring more oxygen to the skin. Aside from its hundreds of other benefits, green tea can help you clear out your skin of any imperfections. It will improve your skin’s complexion, quality, elasticity, and skin health in general.

Plus, green tea is an amazing way to detoxify your whole body!

After you prepare and drink your daily cup of green tea, you can use the teabag as a facial mask or apply it to your eyes to decrease under-eye puffiness.

Tip #88: The Miracles of Coconut Oil

Many celebrities swear that coconut oil plays a huge role in their health and beauty regime. And I cannot help but agree!

Coconut oil has many benefits and can be used for basically anything – cooking, eating, moisturizing, exfoliators, face mask, hair mask, lotion, and so on.

If you wish to feel the benefits that coconut oil can bring for your skin, feel free to incorporate it into your daily diet.

Another option is to prepare a homemade exfoliator from coconut oil and ground coffee beans or granulated sugar. Next, use it to moisturize the dry areas of your body such as your heels, elbows, and knees. Or, use it as a scalp treatment to improve your hair growth and quality. Your options are endless!

Tip #89: Always Start With One New Product at a Time

When deciding to purchase a new skin care product, make sure that it’s the only new product you apply at that time. If you start using more than one new product at a time, you won’t be able to figure out which one works and which one doesn’t.

Furthermore, you won’t be able to notice the way in which a product works. So, if you buy a new serum, don’t buy an another new anti-age cream. Like this, you will know if the serum works for you or not. If it doesn’t work, then there’s no reason to continue buying that product and wasting your money.

Tip #90: Don’t Rub Your Eyes

Dark eye circles and puffy under eye bags can appear for many different reasons. Sometimes this is genetic, but other times they can also appear from lack of sleep, stress, or excessive rubbing with your hands.

I know that our eyes sometimes itch and it seems impossible not to rub them, especially after waking up. However, in these cases, it’s better to just lightly touch them or apply cold compresses so that you freshen up and wake up.

The skin under your eyes is extremely sensitive, so excessive rubbing and pulling will cause great damage.

Tip #91: Olive Oil to the Rescue

Olive oil plays a huge part in Mediterranean diet which is proven to be the healthiest diet we can adopt. Olive oil is full of monounsaturated fatty acids which keep our body and skin younger.

You can try using olive oil as a facial massage oil, a gentle makeup removal product, a base for many masks and exfoliators, and so on. Be careful with oils if you have greasy skin and acne. But, if you have normal or dry skin, olive oil will improve your skin significantly.

Tip #92: Avoid Bangs, Caps, and Hats

If you have a haircut with bangs, you might notice your forehead becoming a problem area. Even though it’s not recommended to wash your hair daily, make sure that you wash at least your bangs. The oil from your bangs can cause forehead irritation and breakouts, so keeping them clean is a must.

The same goes for hats and caps. In the summer, it’s a good idea to wear them for sun protection. But, make sure that you wash them frequently to avoid bacteria transferring to your face. This is especially important in the summer months when you’re sweating.

Tip #93: Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil can be successfully used to treat mild to moderate acne. When used for this purpose, you should aim for a product with no more than 5% tea tree oil.

Products with a higher percentage of this oil are usually used for other problems such as nail fungus, which means they’re too abrasive for your face. Tea tree oil is best used as a spot treatment and applied directly on the acne or pimple. You can apply this oil overnight to achieve better results.

Tip #94: Foundation with Zinc Oxide

Many makeup products, especially foundations, contain an ingredient called zinc oxide. If you often suffer from acne breakouts, these products are the perfect solution for you.

While most foundations clog your pores and can cause breakouts, zinc oxide foundations actually cure your acne instead of just covering them. But don’t worry, they still have the same coverage power just like any other foundation. So, use these foundations for a 2-in-1 – coverage plus treatment at the same time!

Tip #95: Soften Your Skin Before You Try to Extract Anything

Ask any professional, and they’ll tell you not to pick your skin. Yet, to be realistic, we all want to squeeze out a blackhead once in a while. If you decide to take care of your own blackheads, always wash or shower first to open up your pores.

Use a blackhead remover tool if you want to do it yourself. Although, I recommend to go to a professional.

Tip #96: Always Clean Your Blackhead Extractor

Your blackhead extractor, as well as any other tools that touch your face, need to be properly cleaned and sanitized before using. The same goes for your hands and practically anything else that comes in direct skin contact with your face.

You can clean these tools properly with special solutions or with pure alcohol. That’s the best way to ensure that all the bacteria is killed.

Tip #97: For Severe Acne, Ask for Medication

If you suffer from a severe case of acne which cannot be solved with any of the above-mentioned tips, talk to your dermatologist and get a prescription medicine.

For example, some women may benefit from oral estrogen contraceptives which balance out their hormones, while others might do better with anti-androgen medications.

Depending on the underlying cause of your acne, you also might be given antibiotics to destroy your skin bacteria. And finally, the last resort is usually a medicine called Accutane (isotretinoin) which is effective but can have many undesired side effects.

Tip #98: The Ups and Downs of Coffee

For all of you coffee lovers, we have good and bad news. The good news is that your leftover ground coffee can be used as an amazing exfoliator which will revive your skin and increase circulation and blood flow. Plus, ground coffee is one of the best fighters of cellulite.

The bad news is that you need to cut back on your caffeine consumption. Even though one cup of coffee might be ok to wake you up, excessive caffeine can actually trigger acne breakouts. Especially with added sugar and cream.

Tip #99: Other Beneficial Foods

Aside from some food we mentioned above, other incredible things to consume that will help you improve your skin are: tomatoes, watermelon, broccoli, apple cider vinegar, sardines, salmon, dark chocolate, walnuts, almond milk, oysters, bell peppers, kiwis, pumpkin, carrots, chickpeas, eggs, kale, soy, berries, and many more.

All fruits and vegetables are amazing for a healthy skin, but these are some of the best ones that target the skin.

Tip #100: Consult Your Dermatologist

For any skin problem, you might have that doesn’t go away no matter how many of the above tips you follow, it’s best to pay a visit to your dermatologist. This is especially true if we’re talking about a more serious problem such as severe acne. These things can leave permanent scars if not treated properly and on time. So, in such cases, your best bet is to consult a professional.
